If you have to bring people in to do this, its not going to be cost effective in most cases IMHO.
Real question is if you have the skill set in house to pull it off or not at any level weather that be centroid or something cheaper where you get to work most the kinks out yourself. Servo's and drives all boils down to what you want and how fast you want it to go - accelerate.ĭon't diss the stepper hobbyists too hard, they probably have less in one of there machines than you have in a typical break down call out for something cheap and also hobbyist or pro, when you do your own retrofit, after that its so simple to fix if you have the need as you truly understand it. You can either do PLC on the machine and interface that back with a conventional industrial PLC or you can do it with another board from the PC. Depending on what you need to interface with the current or your chosen steppers and drives the control side will be sub £1K with something like a MESA board. Its a seriously capable chunk of computing code when correctly applied and is generally no were near the limit of any system your going to put it on. Honestly linux cnc, its in a different world to mach and trust me you will make your costs back faster than the dent it will put in your pride. All to way down to transport and rigging of another machine, removal of the other, etc. I know the PLC and ladder is the biggest deal here and we are willing to put some time in but we all know the time/cost has to make sense too. Fanuc Red caps are EVERYWHERE and cheap and capable. It just seems you have these guys that can barely afford steppers playing with CNC, then you have owners that hire someone in to retrofit their machine and spend huge bucks. We can probably go buy another machine for that.
if we want to consider real servos, real accuracy, and a serviceable and relatively intuitive control, what are the options? We have looked at Centroid that that's not happening. But at the same time, we are not about to but China steppers on it with questionable Mach software. We are over it! We are loosely pondering the idea of recontrolling the machine BUT there is no way our budget will allow a turnkey system.
We have a 3 axis router that is mechanically sound but the control is proprietary, archaic, slow, and expensive to even look at.
